Syderstone – home of the Norfolk Painting School
In 2007 the School started in Martin’s studio in the North Norfolk village of Syderstone; it might be sleepy, but it’s friendly and has lots of smashing local pubs nearby, what’s more it’s just two minutes drive from the School Studios at Tattersett. As a friendly family business we like to give students every chance to get together of an evening for a glass of wine and a chat about their day, so most of our accommodation is still in the village.
All of our properties are quirky Norfolk buildings from an Old Chapel to a wartime bungalow, an old studio and even a modernised 17th century pigman’s hovel. Wherever you stay you’ll get a a comfortable bed, a decent shower and a quiet patio or garden to sit out on in the evening.
Although mobile phone signals are erratic in Norfolk, our properties have complimentary broadband.
Most of our students choose to eat out at one of the many excellent local gastro pubs or restaurants and chew over the day’s work. Personally we think you can’t beat fish and chips overlooking the pretty harbour at Wells.
The Old Methodist Chapel
A light filled converted chapel in the heart of a Norfolk village
We bought the Old chapel in 2004 as a family home for us in Norfolk, so it’s a much loved building, full of great light and good memories for hundreds of students. The Chapel has three bedrooms, a stunning double height lounge, and a fully equipped kitchen. It has three bedrooms (not en-suite) and two bathrooms (one a wet room). There is off road parking for one car and unlimited on road parking a few yards from the house. From £100 a night.
A traditional brick and flint Norfolk cottage with a very pretty garden
Grange Cottage is a beautiful brick and flint house with 3 non en suite bedrooms and two bathrooms (both are shower rooms / WC). It has a fully equipped kitchen, lovely garden (shared with Grange cottage Barn) and a cute lounge with a little coal fired stove. There is unrestricted on road parking adjacent to the property. Most evenings you can slip next door to The Lynn Arms (Syderstone’s local pub) for a quiet pint, where food is served. From £100 per night ( whole cottage )
Grange Cottage Barn
A cosy retreat in a converted pigman’s hovel, with a great garden to sit out in
A beautiful and comfy self contained studio apartment , for one (or a very tactile couple), with a double bed, en suite bathroom, kitchenette ( No Oven or hob) ) and use of a shared garden to sit out. Grange cottage Barn is in the grounds of Grange Cottage, adjacent to The Lynn Arms Pub. £65 per night single, £75 per night double
Two suites at the quiet end of the village with a large garden
A spacious bungalow at the edge of Syderstone, Arwyn offers a choice of two adjacent suite style apartments, suitable for singles or couples (bedroom, bathroom, lounge) with a fully equipped shared kitchen. There is also a large south facing garden to sit out in, which it shares with The Old Studio. Arwyn has off road parking for several cars. £65 per night single , £75 per night double.
The Old Studio
A spacious and modern converted studio with a large comfortable lounge area and garden
Site of the original school, The Old Studio is a modern, spacious, self contained en suite apartment with kitchenette ( No Oven or Hob) , and shared garden. Off road parking for the Old Studio is available in front of Arwyn. £65 per night single , £75 per night Double
Shammer House B&B
A stunning Georgian country house with sumptuous suites and cosy attic bedrooms
An easy 10 minute drive from the School, Shammer House offers B&B rooms in our lovely Georgian Farmhouse. We have four bedrooms (2 en -suite, 2 with ensuite WC and sink ,and shared shower room) ) and a beautiful guest garden where you can relax after work. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided in your room, as is a continental breakfast which is laid out in the dining room, however there are no facilities for individual food preparation at the property; exactly like a country house hotel.
There is ample off road parking at Shammer, limited internet is available. Evening meals are not available, however you wouldn’t want to because Shammer is a two minute drive from several of Norfolk’s best gastro pubs including The Duck at Stanhoe. Single £70 per night ( we do not offer accommodation to non-painting couples)
What to expect in North Norfolk
North Norfolk is one of the most beautiful areas in the country, with a wealth of walks, fantastic pubs and rural activities, however it is (very) dark at night, the roads are single track and you will need to travel some miles to get any bits and pieces you need. Consequently we strongly recommend that you come to the School with a car. If you can’t drive then the School can arrange private cab transfers from Kings Lynn station, Stansted or Norwich Airport – please call for a quote.
A note on taxis and public transport
Many students come here from London without cars, and have wonderful course experiences, however unlike London, rural north Norfolk is not served by taxis or public transport.
If you anticipate needing to book a cab then it is essential that you do so several days in advance. Please contact the school for our list of recommended firms. If you do not have a car we can accommodate you in B&B’s which can offer transfers to and from the School.
