Certificate Course: Old Master Skills

Certificate Course: Old Master Skills

Everything was contemporary once, so it makes sense to base your contemporary oils on tried and treated methods – but how? Old Master Skills is three linked and themed workshops to take you from Turner’s ambigous light, to the drama of Value, and the secrets of creating luminosity.

An ideal course if you love the craft and art of painting, and want to incorporate old master skills to give your work the edge over untrained contemporary artists.

  • Workshop One: Turner : Land and Sea Reimagined.
  • Workshop Two: Caravaggio and the Drama of Light.
  • Workshop Three: From Rembrandt to Kreutz:  Creating Luminosity

So three complementary genres, there very different visions you can learn and a lot of skills, mediums and techniques on offer. Over the Certificate you may paint landscapes, marine studies, figures, interiors, and still life, plus your own creative home studies of course.

How does it Work?

Based in Norfolk for four days per month for three months this course links practical workshops with structured home assignments to help you learn and develop new contemporary painting skills.

This course is available with inclusive accommodation, subject to availability.

  • Workshop One Turner : Land and Sea Reimagined.

Let us show you the techniques used by Turner, which electrified the art world in the mid 19th Century and redefined landscape and marine painting.

Workshop One Turner; Land & Sea reimagined is a technical course, which explores the power of suggestion, the use of optics and layered paint effects to create suggestive and powerful visual ambiguity.

Ideal for practicing oil painters, with an interest in improving their skills with traditional glazing, soft encaustic and other optical painting media, Turner’s methods are relevant to both traditional and contemporary artists.

This workshop may be taken as a stand alone three day short course.

  • Workshop Two: Caravaggio and the Drama of Light.

Value is the dominant force in painting, yet many artists fail to embrace its creative and compositional possibilities. Caravaggio & the Drama of Light is a exploration of the power of value driven works, encompassing not just the old masters, but successful contemporary artists whose work relies on values such as Richter and John Virtue.

This course aims to get you using values positively and powerfully to create more arresting and visually striking works.

This workshop may be taken as a stand alone three day short course.

  • Workshop Three: From Rembrandt to Kreutz: Creating Luminosity

Luminosity in painting is an optical illusion, because paintings reflect rather than emit light. Rembrandt to Kreutz is a practical course which explores how this illusion of light can be recreated using simple methods and principles, before going on to discuss how the old masters refined the process with various mediums.

Starting with Baroque painting, the course looks at how its techniques were picked up by Luminist artists  in the 19th century and are used to day in much American figurative painting.

This workshop may be taken as a stand alone three day short course.
