Learn to take your foundation painting skills to the next level , with our Course Director Martin Kinnear. Widely recognised as an expert in both traditional and contemporary oil painting techniques, Martin  is hosting a program of one off four day workshops through the year, including :

Kinnear on Turner: ‘As a technician, a craftsman, an artist an innovator and a visionary Turner stands alone, is Martin’s summary of J. M. W. Turner, an artist whom he studied for many years.

This one off workshop explores Turner’s methods, ideas and approaches to both direct and indirect painting.

Painters learn by standing on the shoulders of giants, and nobody understood oils like Turner. Martin Kinnear with a full size study of Staffa Fingal’s Cave in his demonstration theatre.

Kinnear on Colour: ‘ Colour is the starting point for success as a contemporary artist, just as Value was the foundation of Old Master painting’, is Martin’s view on the vital  importance of learning to use colour creatively and precisely.

This one off workshop explores contemporary and impressionist colour planning, and how Martin has used it in his acclaimed one man shows.

Kinnear on Luminosity: ‘ Light in painting, must start from an appreciation that luminosity is  simply an illusion, and like all illusions requires craft’, says Martin, about the necessity to understand the interaction between light, Value and Optics in creating paintings which appear to glow.

This one off workshop explains how the old masters created increasingly convincing illusions of light by  precisely combining opacity, value, temperature and colour  in their oils.

Without light a painting is nothing. One of Kinnear’s 48×36″ studies from his 2010 series The Quick and the Dead.

Kinnear on Skies: ‘ If I could paint an ever moving, transient form such as the sky, then I knew I could master painting ‘, reflects Martin, on his decade long obsession with sky painting; a discipline which launched his professional career. .

This one off workshop explores Martin’s method for both traditional and contemporary sky painting, embracing concepts such as mutability, colour temperature, palletisation, glazing, opacity and  both edge and range management.

What’s included?

All of the Kinnear On: courses include everything you need on and for the course, plus a light lunch, refreshments and printed key notes.

Session one of the four day course (day one) is included as a core skills session, led by an Assistant Tutor to help students get up to speed for Martin’s three day workshop.

The courses are non selective, however they are written to suit students who have tried courses from our foundation or intermediate programs.
