Painting The Figure: Three months of working on the painting the human figure and portrait, in a classical style, using contemporary colour and mark making, and directly from life. By teaching you a classical approach to figures, before exploring contemporary ways to work, this course aims to give you the visual language used by todays’ very best figurative artists.

The perfect course if you want to get back to painting directly from observation and get some originality, veracity and vitality into your work.

  • Workshop One: Classical Figure Painting – Velasquez to Sargent – classical portraiture and figure painting techniques
  • Workshop Two: Contemporary Figure Painting  – from Impressionism to digitally inspired art – contemporary approaches to making portraits and figures come alive
  • Workshop Three: Painting From Life  – Three days of structured sessions from the live model, using techniques from workshops one and two, plus your own creativity.

This energising certificate is all about strategies for painting the human portrait, and full figure (still and in motion), to capturing the real world, We’ll show you ways to turn visual complexity into strong effective painting.

How does it Work?

Based in Norfolk for four days per month for three months this course links practical workshops with structured home assignments to help you learn and develop new contemporary painting skills.

Workshop One: Classical Figure Painting – Velasquez to Sargent

Classical Portrait and Figure painting needn’t take you years to learn. Velasquez to Sargent shows you how to paint atelier style figures using Baroque to late 19th century traditional oil sketching techniques.

During the course you will learn the key method for creating traditional figure paintings, as well as the ways that masters such as Velasquez modified this to create their style.

Workshop Two: Contemporary Figure Painting

Figures have always been a key genre in painting, and painting them is an essential skill for contemporary artists; the most successful of which combine traditional core skills with contemporary aesthetics.

Contemporary Figure Painting is a course about understanding and breaking the rules, making it an ideal companion to our Classical Figures & Portraits.  Using mark making, composition, colour and selected traditional principles you will create vibrant and lively studies.

Workshop Three: Painting From Life

Life drawing is fun, but life painting is utterly engrossing. Painting From Life is a structured and tutored workshop in working from the figure with oils, intended to give you the skills and techniques you need to paint confidently at your local life group, or to work directly from models in your own studio.

Embracing classical skills and approaches as well as  contemporary aesthetics , the course will give you opportunities to work on both long and short poses using classical and contemporary techniques.
