Kinnear On Luminosity

Knowing how to create an illusion of light is the key to not just old master painting, but the best contemporary works also

Kinnear on Luminosity: ‘ Light in painting, must start from an appreciation that luminosity is  simply an illusion, and like all illusions requires craft’, says Martin, about the necessity to understand the interaction between light, Value and Optics in creating paintings which appear to glow.

This one off workshop explains how the old masters created increasingly convincing illusions of light by  precisely combining opacity, value, temperature and colour  in their oils.

Written for with our ex foundation students in mind, the course is intended for practicing oil painters. Places are strictly limited, and this course will only be offered once, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Without light a painting is nothing. One of Kinnear’s 48×36″ studies from his 2010 series The Quick and the Dead.
